Growing Red Rooster Potatoes.

Growing Red Rooster Potatoes in Gouda: A Gastron Garden Guide

At Gastron Garden, we believe in cultivating ingredients from the ground up. This spring, we’re planting one of the most versatile and flavourful potatoes around: the Red Rooster potato. With its red skin, yellow flesh, and all-purpose qualities, it’s a perfect fit for both kitchen creativity and backyard gardening. Here’s how to grow it successfully in the unique climate of Gouda, Netherlands.

What is the Red Rooster Potato?

Originally bred in Ireland in 1990 by Harry Kehoe at the Teagasc Oak Park Research Centre, the Red Rooster is known for its earthy, buttery flavor and creamy texture. It’s ideal for boiling, roasting, mashing, steaming, and even frying into chips. This makes it a great choice for a home garden focused on organic and delicious produce.

When to Plant in Gouda

Gouda’s maritime climate is cooler and wetter than many other parts of Europe, but it’s ideal for potato cultivation with the right preparation.

Planting window: Late March to mid-April
Soil temperature: At least 7°C (45°F) and well-drained

This means early April is the perfect time to get your seed potatoes into the ground.

Preparing Your Potatoes

1. Chitting (Pre-sprouting): Place your seed potatoes in a cool, light-filled room for 2–3 weeks before planting. Let strong, stubby sprouts form.
2. Cutting (optional): If the seed potatoes are large, cut them into chunks with at least 1–2 eyes per piece, then let the cut surfaces dry for 1–2 days.

Soil & Site Preparation

  • Soil type: Loamy or sandy with good drainage
  • Soil pH: 5.5 to 6.5
  • Raised beds or ridged rows are recommended to prevent waterlogging

Use compost or aged manure to enrich the soil, and if you have a rotary tiller (like the FUXTEC FX-AF1212), this is the time to use it.

Planting Instructions

  • Row spacing: 60–75 cm (24–30 in)
  • Plant spacing: 30–35 cm (12–14 in)
  • Depth: 10–15 cm (4–6 in)

Plant with the sprouts facing up and cover with soil.

Care & Maintenance

Watering: In Gouda’s climate, rainfall is usually sufficient, but during dry spells, water deeply once a week. Avoid soggy conditions.
Earthing up (hilling): When plants reach 15–20 cm tall, mound soil around the base. This protects developing tubers from sunlight and promotes higher yields.
